Wood Types & Engraving Characteristics

I typically work with acacia, bamboo, and occasionally other hardwoods—each offering distinct appearance and engraving results:

  • Acacia: A dense hardwood with rich, warm shades and pronounced grain. Engravings are often deep and dark, but natural density variations and resin pockets can produce slightly uneven contrast in places.
  • Bamboo: Technically a grass, bamboo is firm and consistent. It yields crisp engraving, although its naturally occurring lighter and darker streaks can lead to tone‑on‑tone effects—charming, but less contrasty than uniform hardwood.
  • Other Woods (e.g., maple, walnut): Lighter woods like maple deliver sharp, high‑contrast engraving with fine detail. Darker options such as walnut engrave deeper but result in subtler contrast, and may require deeper settings to achieve strong visibility.

I’ll help you select the best wood to match your design and contrast preference.

Board Formats & Custom Styling

Whether you supply your own board or select one from me, I offer a range of formats: rectangular boards, paddles with handles, round platters, and rope‑handle versions. I also offer optional features like juice grooves, beveled edges, or rope accents to complement both form and function.

Designs are fully customizable—include names, dates, recipes, icons, or monograms per your vision and occasion.

Food‑Safe Finishes & Maintenance

After engraving, I treat each board with:

  • Mineral oil: A colorless, odorless food‑grade oil that conditions the wood and helps resist moisture—ideal for frequent maintenance.
  • Mineral oil + beeswax blend: This combination adds more sheen, water resistance, and deeper nourishment for the wood.

For best longevity, hand-wash gently, dry promptly, and reapply the finish monthly or as needed based on appearance and dryness.

Use‑Case & Longevity

Many of these boards are treasured as decorative items or used lightly—perfect for serving charcuterie, displaying, or occasional food prep. They’re built to function, though heavy chopping or dishwasher use will gradually dull the engraving. With proper hand washing and conditioning, these boards should stay beautiful and usable for years.
